Emergency Drills

Emergency drills are held periodically to acquaint your child with evacuation and other emergency procedures. These may make quite an impression on your child the first time, but your child will soon become accustomed to the procedures and know what to do when the drills are held.  Please talk to your child and help us prepare him/her in case of an emergency.

Each month we conduct a fire drill.  These drills are unannounced and take place at different times throughout the day.  The children and staff respond very quickly in these practice drills and most often we evacuate the entire building in less than one minute.

Per the North Carolina Division of Child Development, Building Blocks has an Emergency Preparedness Plan on file.  Twice yearly we conduct other types of drills such as tornado drills, natural disaster drills and intruder drills.  Our staff is well trained regarding the evacuation procedures and always remains calm in guiding your child to the appropriate area for evacuation.

Building Blocks has made arrangements with local businesses and schools in the event that we would need to have an off-site evacuation. We would be able to evacuate the children to a safe and secure location that has plenty of food and water in the event of a lengthy stay.  Parents are given the emergency evacuation locations upon enrollment.

The Building Blocks infant staff members are also trained in SIDS risk reduction procedures and SIDS drills are conducted twice yearly as well.  During these drills staff members are tested on how to respond to an unresponsive infant.  Different scenarios are introduced and staff are required to role play their responses.

Although these drills may initially frighten your child and make them uneasy, we practice these drills so that in the rare event an emergency situation arises, everyone, including your children, is prepared to calmly evacuate the premises and remain safe.
